Why do people feel traditions, however pointless or horrible, need to be honored just for BEING traditions?

It suits them in that they don't have to think and exercise their brains for something better.Actually ,traditions and customs have a wider and more refined meaning than just repeating the old happenings.Most of the times people do such thing in the name of tradition as they want to do them and not because these are really tradition.
