Horrible taste in my mouth, HELP?

Ok, well a couple days ago the area on my gum where that little string-like piece of skin that connects your gum to your mouth on my bottom lip became really sore, and its getting worse and worse every day. I also happen to be sick with a virus, but i dont know if that has anything to do with it. However, randomly tonight i got this absolutley disgusting taste in my mouth, like unbearably bad. I brushed my teeth and used mouthwash, and i can still kind of taste it. Does this mean that thing in my mouth is infected? Or am i just getting a bad taste in my mouth because im sick. help?
