If you are worried about being sent damaged or faulty goods or that the item has been damaged in transit. Open the package before you sign for it. If you do notice any damage ask the courier to contact his office to find out what steps need to be taken to rectify this. Most reputable courier companies will carry in-transit insurance to cover lost or damage goods. Do not sign for it as this is an admission that you received the goods in an undamaged state.
